Short Term Car Insurance – Can Students Use it Too?

Anyone who drives a car requires proper insurance before doing so. Students usually cannot afford a car. Their parents have to pay for their education and this leaves no funds for another car. When students come home on vacation, they like to take their friends for a ride or a drink at some club. It could be anything but driving your parent’s car can pose problems. The parents will have insurance but the student will need one before he can drive the car.

An adjustment can be made in your insurance policy to include the student as well. It can be done but the process takes a lot of time and the student might be going back when he gets the green light to drive. It is also very expensive because you have to pay a premium to carry out the adjustment. Another option is a short term car insurance.

Short term car insurance can be availed by the student for any period at any time. The process is simple, fast and carried out online. Go to the website of the company providing short term insurance, complete the application, make the payment and print the certificate at home. Your insurance policy will be registered with the MID and you can drive your parent’s car. Short term insurance can be purchased for a period of 28 days maximum.

The biggest advantage of short term insurance is that any claims made under it do not affect the parent’s annual policy no claims discount. The insurance is in the student’s name and he can take it out any time that he wants.

However, short term insurance has one disadvantage. The student can avail it ONLY if he is at least 21 years old. Even parents do not let their children drive their car if they are younger than that. Apart from this, short term insurance is a very good option for students who are 21 or older.
